Who-d a-thunk it? Communist dictator Fidel Castro lives life of capitalist luxury with mansions, diamonds, and yachts?

From a Miami Herald article “Former bodyguard to Fidel Castro describes dictator’s luxe life in new book“:

Fidel Castro once claimed that he lived a life of exemplary revolutionary frugality on a salary of merely $36 per month. “Lies,” said Juan Reinaldo Sanchez, 65, who served as a bodyguard for the former Cuban leader for 17 years and has published a book of memoirs portraying Castro as a sort of feudal lord who ran the island like it was a personal fiefdom.

Castro controlled about 20 luxury homes, a Caribbean island getaway with a pool and dolphins, the 88-foot yacht Aquarama II, and several fishing vessels whose catch was sold for dollars deposited in his accounts, according to Sanchez.

“He always claims he lives frugally. Lies. He lives in a luxury that most Cubans can’t even imagine,” Sanchez told el Nuevo Herald in his first interview after writing his book, The Secret Life of Fidel Castro, published Wednesday in France.

“Contrary to what he has always said, Fidel has never renounced capitalist comforts or chosen to live in austerity. Au contraire, his mode de vie is that of a capitalist,” says the book, written with Axel Gyldén, a senior journalist at L’Express magazine in France. “This is the first time someone from Castro’s intimate circle, someone who was part of the system and a first-hand witness to these events, has spoken,” Gyldén told journalists.

    • Actually its normal for any elite see the popes of the 15th century for example. Or today take the Bishop of Bling in Germany. If you are an elite you try to take advantage of being part of the elite. Pope Leo X captured this “Since God has given us the papacy, let us enjoy it” (1475 to 1521). So the elite have always been thus and will always be thus.

    • In 1972 I was living in Chicago and actually saw a local dictator, Richard Daley, go on TV and rip one of his commissioners a new one for “taking too much graft”. He was serious and he was angry. This man had committed a most serious breach of policy by taking more graft than he was allowed.

      • In 1972 I was living in Chicago and actually saw a local dictator, Richard Daley, go on TV and rip one of his commissioners a new one“…

I remember that! I too was living in Chicago at the time…

I remember how Mike Royko acted stunned in his rantings for a couple of weeks after that little incident too…

Regardless of their rhetoric, some of our politicians are mini – Castros

          • Yes indeed, I read Royko’s book back in ’72 after it had been out for a year already…

200+ pages of light but informative reading…

Royko and Daley did NOT get along even a little bit…

I admired Daley not for his politics but for his low, animal cunning and by and large Daley was a nice guy considering the game he was in – unless you oppsed him publically…

No doubt about it though, Mike Royko was a genius wordsmith…

  1. Oh please. I don’t believe this guy for a minute. Next thing you know, you’ll be telling me that Hillary Clinton is making $200,000 for a single speaking engagement. Everyone knows that leftists walk the talk, Mark.

  2. Is anybody really surprised by this? Check out Peter Schweizer’s “Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy.”

    • Be glad for hypocrisy. With Hillary making $200k for hot air and Obama soon to make even more, you don’t think they are serious about taxing rich people, do you?

  3. Is anyone surprised? All communist leaders are narcissistic, psychopaths. That is a requirement to achive such a station. These are people who are mentally distrubed and drivein to control everyone else.

Look up the definishion of psychopath and you will be reading a profile of Obama and Castro and many others.

  4. Look no further than the amazing holidays the first family plus hangers on like mother-in-law take to exotic locations around the world.

All dressed up as diplomatic visits.
