The Wall Street Journal reports:
Pentagon officials have firmed up plans for military strikes against Syria that would likely use cruise-missile strikes to “deter and degrade” President Bashar al-Assad’s security forces without dramatically altering the country’s balance of power, senior defense officials said Tuesday. (emphasis added)
Seriously? So what exactly is our objective in Syria? To blow stuff up? If ever there was evidence that Obama has no strategy in Syria, this is it. The purpose of military power is to “alter the balance of power” in a conflict. If that is not your objective, you should not use it.
Incredibly, Obama officials are actually holding up the Clinton administration’s cruise missile strikes against Sudan and Afghanistan after the 1998 East Africa Embassy bombings as a model.
Boy, those sure worked at “deterring and degrading” al Qaeda, didn’t they?
On the contrary, our feckless response was seen by Osama bin Laden — and the entire world — as a sign of weakness. Rather than deterring our enemies, it emboldened them to escalate their attacks — ultimately with an attack on our homeland on September 11, 2001.
That is why, when President Bush was asked after the 9/11 attacks what he intended to do, he replied: “When I take action I’m not going to fire a $2 million missile at a $10 empty tent and hit a camel in the butt. It’s going to be decisive.”
Apparently the only ones in Syria who need to fear Barack Obama are the camels.
