Every time I hope that the United Nations can become a more dignified organization, it does something to remind me of why that will probably never happen. Yesterday, the UN made Robert Mugabe a tourism leader. Mugabe, the despotic leader of Zimbabwe, is subject to sanctions and travel bans to most civilized countries of the world. Perhaps one can make the case that some of the sanctions on Zimbabwe’s elite should be lifted, but the UN’s tone deaf approach is to laud Mugabe with honors he doesn’t deserve. If anything, such actions will entrench opposition to ever lifting sanctions while Mugabe still leads.
